“Little River”

This region was explored by early French trappers who called it ‘Little River’ to distinguish it from the Mississippi River just a few miles east. The Swamp Land act of 1850 provided mechanism for reverting title for federal owned swamp land to states. Which would drain the land to turn it profitable farmland.

“Mississippi Flyway”

The Mississippi Flyway stretches from Canada’s Hudson Bay to the Gulf Coast, traveling along Ohio, Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. This flyway has a lack of obstacles compared to other flyways. It also provides access to the northern breeding grounds, which are where many species go for survival. The many lakes and rivers along the flyway make it most convenient for the bird’s migration.

Southeast Missouri provides an abundance of food for the birds traveling south, making our area a crucial point throughout the flyway.
